Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are metal posts that act as artificial tooth roots. Similar in shape to screws, Dr. Prokopets surgically positions them beneath your gums into your jawbone.

Once in place, dental implants bond to your natural bone and become a sturdy base for supporting one or more artificial teeth. Dental implants allow your restorative dentist to mount replacement teeth onto them.

What are the different kinds of dental implants?

Dr. Prokopets offers only the highest standard of dental implants that have been heavily researched:

Endosteal

This is the most common type of dental implant. After adequate anesthesia, Dr. Prokopets will position the implant into the proper position that has been carefully pre-planned.  Each implant holds one or more prosthetic teeth and provides you with an excellent alternative to bridges and removable dentures.

How is the dental implant procedure performed?

Regardless of the number of dental implants you require, Dr. Prokopets works in stages over several months as you need time to heal in between each phase. In certain instances, these steps can be condensed into one or two visits depending on the clinical situation.

Once removal of your damaged tooth is complete, Dr. Prokopets prepares your jawbone for surgery and places the implant into your jawbone. She sends you home to heal because the bone to implant integration process takes several months.

After healing, you return to the office where Dr. Prokopets places an abutment, or extension, of the implant metal post into your mouth. At this time she will perform a torque test to make sure the implant is integrated before sending you to your restorative dentist to make the crown.

What benefits do dental implants provide?

Dental implants look, fit, and feel like natural teeth, allowing you to protect your bones and teeth while stimulating bone growth and preventing bone loss. Unlike dentures, there’s no clicking, slipping, or the need to remove perfectly healthy teeth.
